Michael Smith (Michael Whitaker Smith), born on 7th January, 1957 to Paul Smith and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia.
His father (Paul Smith) worked as a oil refinery worker while his mother (Barbara Smith) was a caterer.
While growing up as a young kid, Michael Smith had a certain love for music, the church he was attending then also added to this love for music he developed.
Michael smith started playing piano well as a teenager because he learned it at an early age, this gave him an edge to be able to sing in his church choir.
At the age of 10, Michael Smith got closer to God by becoming involved in Bible study and found a study group to discuss christian faith with.
But later lost his faith and love for christ because he became lonely, he changed location to pursue high school. After graduating from High school, he became addicted to alcohol and drugs.
He attended Marshall University but later dropped out after one semester to develop his songwriting skills. During that period he played with various local bands across West Virgina then he met his friend Shane Keister, (a session musician in Nashville) who encouraged him to move to Nashville with him and pursue a professional career in music.
He moved to Nashville in 1978 but wasnt financially stable he needed money so worked as a landscaper to fend for himself. He also played with several local bands in the club but by this time he had gone really deep in drugs addiction and was a smoke addict.
His move to Nashville increased his smoking, drinking habit which made his mom and dad worried but they prayed for him hoping for a change in his life. But deep down Michael Smith's heart he knew what he was doing was not right.
The Next Year after his move to Nashville he started being remorseful of his present addiction and started yearning for a change. So he suffered a breakdown which changed him completely and recommitted him to Christianity. This sudden change made him auditioned for a new contemporary Christian music (CCM) group, Higher ground and got the job as a keyboardist for the group. This decision he took on the long run, his addiction for drugs and alcohol stopped.
Three (3) years later while still playing as a keyboards for Higher Ground, He was signed as a writer to Meadowgreen Music where he wrote numerous gospel hits for artists like Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither and Amy Grant.
Michael Smith - Musical Career
Michael Smith musical career took a swift turn when he became Amy Grant's opening act and recorded his first Grammy-nominated solo album The Michael W. Smith Project (which he also produced himself) in 1983 on the Reunion Records label.
This album contained the first recording of his hit "Friends". By the time Smith's second album Michael W. Smith 2 was released in 1984, he was headlining his own tours. In 1986, Smith released The Big Picture.
After the release of his 1988 effort, i 2 (EYE), Smith once again collaborated with Grant for her "Lead Me On" world tour. The following year, Smith recorded his first Christmas album, simply titled Christmas (1989). and from there his musical journey as being a successful one with release of back to back songs and albums.
In 1996, Smith opened his own record label, Rocketown Records. The label was named after a song on his third album The Big Picture. The first artist signed was Chris Rice, who had written "Go Light Your World", a No. 1 hit song by Kathy Troccoli, in 1995. Smith didn't record under the label himself until 2018.

Smith attended Belmont Church in Nashville, Tennessee and is mentored by its long-time pastor, Don Finto. He is also the founding pastor of New River Fellowship church in Franklin, Tennessee, where he was the lead pastor from 2006 to 2008. Smith and his wife remain involved members of the church.
